Interior and lighting designer Susan Quirke shares her decorating ideas

Interior and lighting designer Susan Quirke set up her London design practice – Quirke McNamara Consultancy – 10 years ago. Here, she shows us some of her high-end projects and talks us through her decorating ideas…

City Penthouse Flat

“We completely re-imagined this two-bedroom, two-bathroom property with office and open-plan living room leading to kitchen and roof terrace. A boutique-hotel style bedroom features illuminated bed and light ‘sculptures’. A spiral glass staircase leads to the open plan living room and bespoke kitchen area with purple and black reflective quartz stone worktops and dark oak units with black and red glass splashbacks. LED lighting and a ‘feature’ extractor create a very modernist feel. The kitchen leads onto the roof terrace, with stunning City views, where we have redesigned the lighting to create the perfect space for entertaining.”

Richmond Penthouse

“We were commissioned to design and decorate this penthouse for a client whose brief was ‘add warmth and luxury’. In the bedroom, we created a ‘floating’ bed, illuminated from underneath for a touch of drama. In the living room we installed a central feature – a pool table – and added a bespoke TV wall in black gloss. The overall look is achieved by ensuring that the furniture and fittings complement each other. LED lighting is controlled by remote to add warmth and depth to the space.”

Islington Mews House

“We completely renovated this mews house in North London for a couple who were setting up their first home together and wanted an interior that showcased their eclectic tastes and art collection. We added a new master bedroom and dressing room and a bespoke bathroom with a curved block glass wall and minimalist shower area. We also designed a roof terrace, with chill out area using feature lighting.”

Bermondsey Bachelor Pad

“This is a classic urban project, where the existing layout didn’t make the best use of the space. QMC reorganised how the owner lived in the space, highlighting the architectural features of the double-height apartment. We wanted to create a dramatic entertainment space with feature lighting and a great stereo. Walnut flooring and dramatic colours throughout combine with LED strip lights and industrial fittings to showcase the beams, exposed ceilings and brickwork.”

Kensington Mews Loft

“This high-end renovation was created for an up-and-coming Iranian artist. As well as a sleek, white kitchen from Poggenpohl complete with wine and champagne fridges, we added a Lutron system of feature lighting throughout that allows the client to control different coloured lighting in different zones of the apartment. In the bedroom, a floating bed is underlit and perfectly sets off the black resin flooring. Feature wallcoverings add softness to what is a sleek, modern interior.”
